Final Registration of Histology to Thermoacoustic Images

Letters & Science (College of) / Physics

Project Description

We are in the process of correlating approximately 1000 histology slides from 20 prostates that were imaged in my thermoacoustics lab immediately after surgical resection. All prostates have biopsy-confirmed cancer, but with widely varying extent (5-60% involvement) and locations. Most prostates are quartered and then breadloafed so that an axial histology level is mounted onto four glass slides. A prior student and I have already patched together each histology level. We are now in the process of confirming our correlation of histology levels to thermoacoustic images, with the help of pathologist Dr. David Hull. Dr. Hull marked tumors and other uncommon features onto the glass histology slides, which Dr. Patch has already traced onto digital images of the histology slides. Some common features, however, were not annotated and must be added.

Tasks and Responsibilites

The student will add annotations for common features, such as cystic spaces, to the digitized histology slides and rerun existing registration software to overlay the regions of interest onto thermoacoustic images.
