Project Description
Seeking a motivated and detail-oriented student to undertake a research project exploring current industry job postings in Industrial and Systems Engineering. This project aims to gather, clean, and organize data from various job posting websites, such as LinkedIn and Indeed, to identify the requirements and skills sought by industries for entry-level positions in this field. The goal of this project is to develop a framework to align curriculum with the industry's needs and expectations, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the job market.
Objectives of the Research:
1. Data Collection: The student will develop a code or script to scrape job postings from relevant websites, such as LinkedIn and Indeed, to gather a substantial dataset for analysis.
2. Data Cleaning and Organization: The collected data will require cleaning and organization to remove duplicates and irrelevant postings and extract essential information such as job titles, required skills, qualifications, and competencies.
3. Natural Language Processing (NLP) Analysis: Utilizing NLP techniques, the student will analyze the job postings to identify the skills and competencies that industries seek in entry-level candidates. This will involve extracting relevant keywords, categorizing skills, and understanding the frequency and importance of specific requirements.
4. Curriculum Alignment: Based on the findings from the NLP analysis, the student will work with faculty members and industry professionals to align the existing curriculum with the identified skills and competencies. This may involve updating current courses, developing new courses, or modifying course content to bridge gaps between the academic program and industry needs.
5. Reporting and Recommendations: The student will compile the research findings into a comprehensive report, highlighting the skills and competencies in demand in the industrial and systems engineering job market.
Tasks and Responsibilites
1. Develop a web scraping code or script to collect job postings from LinkedIn, Indeed, and other relevant job platforms.
2. Clean and organize the collected data, removing duplicates and irrelevant postings.
3. Utilize NLP techniques to extract relevant skills and competencies from the job postings.
4. Analyze the data to identify the most frequently mentioned skills and competencies industries seek.
5. Collaborate with faculty members and industry professionals to align the existing curriculum with the identified industry needs.
6. Assist in updating existing courses, developing new courses, or modifying course content to ensure curriculum alignment.
7. Prepare a comprehensive report summarizing the research findings, including recommendations for curriculum enhancements.
Desired Qualifications
Programming skills, preferably in Python, to develop web scraping code and perform data analysis; Excellent data organization skills; Analytical mindset and ability to extract meaningful insights from large datasets; Good communication skills to collaborate with faculty members and industry professionals; Background or Industrial and Systems Engineering interest is desirable but optional.
