Facilitating Hands-on Learning in Cybersecurity

Engineering & Applied Science (College of) / Computer Science

Project Description

This research aims to enhance hands-on learning in cybersecurity by leveraging external educational resources. Hands-on learning in cybersecurity education is critical, where cybersecurity issues usually involve complex multifacet real-world problems. Utilizing the educational resource from industry and professional certification programs helps students apply cybersecurity concepts to real-world cybersecurity challenges, learn to adjust strategies to changing threats, and be better equipped for cybersecurity careers. This project is based on the learning theory of human-centered learning, where we integrate the students' feedback on these external educational resources into cybersecurity curriculum development. The student researcher will work with the PI to explore external educational resources and complete the assigned tutorials and hands-on projects. The student's feedback on using the provided educational resources will be collected and analyzed in the dimensions of hands-on learning as one part of the final report for this project. The research outcome of this project will be implemented in the development of hands-on learning lab assignments for cybersecurity courses at UWM.

Tasks and Responsibilites

In this research project, the student researcher will: - explore the external educational resources in cybersecurity. - complete the assigned tutorials and hands-on projects. - complete the feedback survey for each assignment. - schedule, organize, and report on the status of assigned tasks. - meet with the faculty supervisor weekly. - write and edit materials for publication and presentation.
Outcomes: The outcome of the research includes 1) a final report that contains the external educational resources, student feedback, and analyzed results; 2) a set of cybersecurity hands-on projects from external resources for an entry-level cybersecurity class; The learning outcome of the student researcher: 1) gain a basic understanding of the field of cybersecurity; 2) gain hands-on experience in cybersecurity; 3) develop academic communication skills.
