Connected Systems Institute – Advanced Manufacturing Use Case Research

Engineering & Applied Science (College of) / Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering

Project Description

The undergraduate research project at the UWM Connected Systems Institute aims to empower students to develop, validate, and optimize automation solutions addressing prevalent challenges in manufacturing. By leveraging the voice of the customer gathered from manufacturers in the greater Milwaukee area, the program ensures that the problem statements guiding the automation solutions are both relevant and impactful. Students will engage in hands-on research, leveraging the CSI manufacturing testbed in collaboration with industry partners.  The objective is to create AI-informed automation solutions that enhance efficiency, productivity, and quality in manufacturing processes, while also providing students with valuable experience and insights into the intersection of AI and industrial automation.

Tasks and Responsibilites

Student tasks and responsibilities for this assignment include: Data Collection and Analysis: Gathering and preprocessing data from various manufacturing automation sources to ensure it is suitable for AI model training. Solution Development: Designing and implementing automation and AI solutions using Fanuc robotics capabilities at CSI to address specific manufacturing problems. Validation and Testing: Running simulations and testing automation solutions to validate accuracy and effectiveness, implementing plan-do-check-act approach to improve performance. Voice of Customer Integration: Analyzing feedback from manufacturers to refine problem statements and ensure automation solutions are aligned with real-world needs. Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining records of research activities, methodologies, and findings, and preparing reports to communicate progress and results. Collaboration: Working closely with CSI leaders, industry partners, and fellow researchers to share insights and advance innovative automation solutions.
