Celebrating Our Cosmic Connections through Our Holidays

Letters & Science (College of) / Physics

Project Description

We (at the UWM Planetarium) want to make the human connection to the universe more explicit by producing a series of programs (3-5) that explain how different holidays around the world are defined and inspired by the solar and/or lunar cycles. We would like to produce programs for Diwali, Easter, Hannukah, Lunar New Year, and Ramadan and that we will share with public audiences.

Tasks and Responsibilites

The student will create graphics that are engaging for general audiences to understand the lunar and solar cycles, how we use them to create different calendars, and to determine when different holidays are in different cultures. The student will have to research these topics since there are subtleties about calendars that are not obvious. For example, Easter is not celebrated at the same time in, say, Catholic Church as it is in the Orthodox Church. The student will highlight how different religions and cultures choose, for example, different phases of the Moon to signal the beginning of a celebration. Furthermore, the student will explore visual ways to depict the themes of light, music, and traditions that are often associated with cultural celebrations. The student will work with the mentor and community partners on campus to ensure the accuracy of our depictions and of a respectful representation of the celebrations as well.
