Project Description
My project is to work on a monograph that looks at the Korean language from the perspective of a high-context language. Since shared information is considered a fundamental component of discourse, context plays a crucial role in Korean communication. Given the assumption that Korean communicators interpret the context similarly, Korean language communication often conveys a significant amount of information implicitly. Therefore, in both grammatical structures and pragmatic delivery, hidden and implicit expressions are commonplace. In Korean, it is customary to omit the grammatical elements of discourse that are repeated. Conversely, however, English is used in a limited context. Conversational discourse is contingent only on what is verbally stated. Low-context communication occurs. Hidden contexts are considered contributing to ambiguity in the discourse by obstructing message clarity. Therefore, native English speakers should understand the importance of illocutionary and social contexts in both sentence structure and speech when learning Korean. In this monograph, I will look at the specifics of high context in the Korean language, including both grammatical and pragmatic viewpoints. I will also look at the difficulties that natural English speakers of Korean should have when learning the language. I will also talk about how we should teach them the high-context elements of teaching Korean while taking the hidden context into account. I’ve been working on this monograph since last year. I completed the theory sections and am working on the grammatical analysis section for the Korean language.
Tasks and Responsibilites
The undergraduate collaborator will support the research project by assisting with data collection and data analysis. They will also review the reference list to ensure all sources are properly cited and included. Additionally, as the monograph progresses, the collaborator will help identify and gather any additional reference materials that may be needed.
