A Longitudinal Study of the Aging Together Anti-Ageism Peer Support Program

Community Engagement & Professions (College of) / Social Welfare (Helen Bader School of) / Social Work

Project Description

This study will evaluate the 10-session Aging Together anti-ageism peer support program for adults 50+ years of age. This program is peer-facilitated by trained older adults. The objectives of the research are to understand whether participation in the Aging Together program helps reduce internalized and relational ageism and depressive symptoms, while enhancing social connectedness, self-efficacy, a sense of purpose in life, and cognitive function for adults 50+ years of age. We are also evaluating the correlation between fidelity of program implementation (i.e., facilitator competence, adherence, and the overall tone of group discussion) and these outcomes.  This is a longitudinal study with 4 timepoints (pre, post, 1-month follow up, and 3-month follow up survey). The methodology to assess the outcomes includes conducted a series of four, 30-minute surveys in-person or by phone and analyzing the outcomes data via Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) in STATA. To determine whether there is a correlation between fidelity and the outcomes, we will first audio record the sessions and complete fidelity checklists. Then, we will conduct intra-class coefficients and ANOVA tests in SPSS to determine whether there is a statistically significant association between fidelity and the outcomes.
