Project Description
The primary objective is to complete the development cycle of a novel volatile dispensing prototype by conducting extensive field testing and performance validation. The prototype utilizes controlled wicking and evaporation mechanisms to disperse incense and insect repellent solutions. We will focus on testing the device in real-world environments—such as farms, campsites, or large open-air facilities—where it will be paired with external fans to evaluate its effectiveness over extended areas. The methodology includes deploying the device in target environments and measuring performance indicators such as evaporation rate, scent/repellent reach, and spreading efficacy under various fan speeds and environmental conditions. Safety of commercial formulations for incense and insect repellants will also be re-verified for human and animal exposure. Data will be collected through spectrometric and mass loss analyses, visual dispersal studies, and environmental feedback, which will be used to inform final design tweaks and validate commercial viability.
Tasks and Responsibilites
The student will lead field deployment efforts, including preparing the prototype for outdoor testing and setting up instrumentation to collect relevant performance data. Additional modifications to the prototype such as coupling with an external fan will be conducted by the student. Other responsibilities include conducting pre-test calibrations, transporting and setting up the prototype at test sites, gathering residual samples and managing corresponding lab tests, gathering data including concentration distributions, ambient temperature, humidity, and incense/repellent consumption. The student will also monitor the usability and reliability of the prototype during operations. Additionally, the student will be expected to compile data for performance comparison, assess real-world usability issues, and assist in finalizing a user-ready version of the prototype. They will also contribute to drafting technical reports and potential publications, and help prepare materials for outreach, poster sessions, or commercialization pitches.
