From Hispanic to Latinx and UWM Latine Activism

Letters & Science (College of) / World Languages & Cultures

Project Description

In conjunction with my current 23-24 CLACS fellowship, Building Bridges, the assistance of an undergraduate student would be invaluable compiling sources that center on the hispano/Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine term trajectory. The purpose is to curate materials in order to develop an archive that would be helpful to instructors and students when navigating these and related (and problematic) terms such as "minority" and "ethnic." Working with an advanced student fluent in Spanish will also add more nuance to the questions and dialogues that the research will prompt. A related goal is for me to delve into the UWM Latino Activism Archives housed at the Golda Meir's Digital Collections for textual analysis. What does it mean to be "hispanos" as we learn it in Latin America; what does it mean contextually and culturally; how does it acquire other meanings in the US context as "Hispanics" become a racialized pan-ethnic identity marker. My research considers the critical work of Suzanne Oboler, Vidal and Martinez, Joseph Rodriguez, Jeffrey Herlihy Mera, and others. Guided by these questions and the undergraduate research component, personal and community understandings will be emphasized and brought into the larger discussion of what does it mean to have a HSI designation.

Tasks and Responsibilites

The student will spend several hours a week--7 hours a week for 15 as the average--gathering sources via library databases and publications on the subject found on social media. The student will check in with the instructor periodically and will maintain a OneDrive (or similar) compilations of sources with a brief assessment for each (annotated bibliography style).
