Research on Global Films & Depictions of Hell

Letters & Science (College of) / Film Studies

Project Description

The objective of the research is a searchable spreadsheet/database of as many global films as possible that show images of hell. The methodology will be straightforward data-gathering, structuring, and analysis, but will also include careful attention to the films.

Tasks and Responsibilites

The student’s job will be to compile as many examples as possible of films that depict spaces of hell. They will construct a database that contains essential, searchable information about the films in different categories: film titles, nation of origin, director, place in film where hell appears, time code appearance and length of hell sequence, other religious iconography, special effects techniques, and special effects supervisors/team. We will work together to create specific searchable categories. The student will also make early qualitative determinations about the depictions: whether they are religious or more secular, whether the spaces are underground or outside of Earth, and whether they are central or adjacent to the main philosophical thrust of the film.
