Project Description
The objective of this project is to use atomic level simulations (namely molecular dynamics) to simulate “smart” polymers. The simulations will be used to improve water filtration technology by reducing the growth of bacteria on water filtration membranes. The results of this project will contribute to a reduction of environmental impact and improved cost and safety of water treatment practices. The student will learn how to develop a molecular dynamics simulations and how to analyze material properties that are relevant in both simulation and empirical practice.
Tasks and Responsibilites
1. Literature review of molecular dynamics simulation for thermo-responsive polymer phase change
2. Development of input files for use in the molecular dynamics program “LAMMPS”
3. Curation and analysis of simulation data to make conclusions
4. Prepare a research summary and poster for presentation of completed research
Desired Qualifications
1. Junior or Senior standing in one of the engineering programs
2. GPA of at least 3.5
3. Familiarity with at least one programming language
