Project Description
This research will focus on the fourth chapter of my current manuscript project called Movies Under the Influence: Substances and Cinema. Movies Under the Influence untangles the knotty relationships between intoxicating substances, theatrical exhibition, and governance. The objective is to complete additional, tangential research I need for the final chapter of the monograph. The methodology will involve primary source research into historical newspapers, congressional records, and state legislative documents and secondary source research into extant books/articles on the legal status of psychedelic drugs.
Tasks and Responsibilites
The student's task will be to complete a state-by-state timeline of laws against psychedelic drugs (LSD, mushrooms/psilocybin, and mescaline) and cannabis from the 1930s-early 1970s. The student will begin with large population states and move outward to determine when each state made each drug illegal, and what the debates and arguments were locally and federally (to the extent possible).
