Project Description

Using an ethnographic approach, students and I will observe seating in public spaces with the goal of designing and prototyping a new type of outdoor seating system. The ultimate goal of this research is to create new outdoor seating that can be deployed in public spaces both on campus and throughout Milwaukee. The design/build nature of this research will allow the team an immediacy to understanding the efficacy of the design.

Tasks and Responsibilites

Create a site map of seating on campus. Research seating typologies Research ergonomic considerations of people of different sizes, ages and abilities Conduct participant observer research, employing a range of ethnographic methodologies to understand how seating is used in public space. Design new seating typologies to accommodate different users Prototype new seating typologies at full scale
