Peer Mentoring

Do you like to help and work with students? Are you interested in developing leadership skills? Does your resume need an eye-catching job experience?

We are now accepting applications for the 2024-2025 Student Success Center Peer Mentor team! Any letter of recommendations can be submitted to ssc@uwm.edu.

We are hiring students who: 

  • Are enrolled at UWM and have completed a minimum of two semesters of coursework
  • Have a GPA 2.5 or better
  • Must be available to begin Wednesday, August 21st, 2024
  • Excited to work with students during their first year at UWM

Academic Skills Tutor

As an AST, you can help enrich your own academic experience by learning and teaching others skills in time management, study strategies, and test taking strategies. In the SSC, Academic Skills Tutors:

Responsibilities:  

  • Balance their priorities: through maintaining an on-campus job while being a student, ASTs learn to practice the time management techniques they teach to their peers.  
  • Encourage their peers: through training in motivational interviewing techniques, ASTs establish a rapport with their students, and help them build the confidence to implement new academic strategies. 
  • Bolster their leadership skills: serving as an AST allows students to build their confidence in leading a meeting and providing constructive feedback.  
  • Strengthen their communication skills: meeting with students in an individual, face-to-face capacity allows ASTs to become a more effective verbal communicator.

Office Assistant

Looking for a rewarding and flexible on-campus job? The Student Success Center (SSC) is looking for an organized, detail-oriented Office Assistant who is welcoming and supportive to aid the needs of our office and staff.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with communication of prospective students, the public, UWM students, and staff, including representing the SSC at various events.  
  2. Assist with the day-to-day activities of the Student Success Center. Provide general assistance to students who inquire about the services of the SSC.  
  3. Assist with accurate record keeping of our attendance records and payroll. 
  4. Assist with the organization of space for SSC services   
  5. Other duties as needed

Technology Assistant

Looking for a rewarding and flexible on-campus job? The Student Success Center (SSC) is looking for an organized, detail oriented Technology Assistants with good time management skills to support the technological needs of our Tutors and SI Leaders!

Responsibilities:  

  1. Develop technology knowledge and train tutors/SI leaders with Zoom, Kaltura, Canvas and WordPress  
  2. Update and maintain the Tutoring/SI Canvas pages and SSC Website to ensure accurate tutoring/SI information and resources 
  3. Communicate tutoring and SI sessions to tutors/SI Leaders, professors/instructors and students  
  4. Process and assist tutor/SI Leaders with in-person and online exam reviews 
  5. Generate monthly and end of semester reports pertaining to exam review recordings
