Elizabeth (Liz) Smith has served as Director of the Children’s Learning Center since 2020.

With over 20 years of experience in Early Childhood Education, Liz is passionate about sharing the journey of growth, learning, development, reflection, partnership, creativity, and joy with children, families, educators, and the community. Liz is motivated by the significance of high-quality early childhood programs, with a focus on the “whole person” approach and a deep understanding that through caring relationships and nurturing the uniqueness of children, families, and educators we build a strong foundation that can transform care and education.

Previously, Liz was the Director of the Early Childhood Program in the Department of Teaching and Learning at UW-Milwaukee’s School of Education. As a Senior Lecturer teaching classes, and through supervision of student teaching and fieldwork experiences, Liz supported the development and preparation of preservice early childhood educators. Liz has also taught in non-profit, independent, and public schools.

Liz has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

Outside of work, Liz can be found spending time exploring different neighborhoods and visiting parks, playgrounds, and nature centers with her three children, catching up with a close friend over coffee or lunch, or at home enjoying time with family.

Fun fact: Liz was a student caregiver, Kindergarten Teacher, Program Coordinator, and parent at the UWM Children’s Learning Center before serving as the Center’s Director.
