Roof Access Information and Procedures

UWM roofs have fall and other hazards. The building list below provides the various hazards present and required proper PPE for UWM personnel. Administrative controls such as safety watches and temporary barriers may be used. Personnel shall plan accordingly to conduct work safely.

In addition to the PPE stated below, the following measures shall be taken:

UWM Facilities – When working around roof edges and a fall system is not available, the employee shall use either the portable guardrail system or the mobile fall restraint system (water bag).

Students, professors or non-facilities personnel – must obtain authorization and training per the Roof Access Procedure.

Contractors – must assess the fall hazards and submit a fall protection plan to your UWM project manager.

Roof Access Procedure

Architectural Urban and Planning (AUP)

  • Hazards – Fall from height. Guardrails are present, but not interconnected.
  • PPE – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Art Building

  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges.
  • PPE – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Art Center Building

  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges.
  • PPE – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Arts Center Lecture Hall

  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges
  • PPE – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Bolton Hall

  • Hazards – Fall from height; Radio frequency hazards are present in designated area.
  • PPE – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Cambridge Commons – 6th Floor

  • Hazards – Fall from height.
  • PPE – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Cambridge Commons – 5th Floor – North and South Wings

  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges.
  • PPE – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Chapman Hall

  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges.

New Chemistry Building

  • Hazards – Potential high winds.
  • PPE – None required. Guardrails present are at adequate height. Strobic fume hood system present.

Cunningham Hall

  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges; Satellites and antennas are present
  • PPE – 15 feet from all edges as parapet is not at adequate height. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Curtin Hall

  • Hazards – Fall from height

EMS

  • Hazards – 4th Floor Roof – Fall from height; 13th Floor Roof – Falcons are present
  • PPE – 4th Floor – 15 feet from leading edge; Guardrails are present at adequate height for 13th Floor Roof. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

Enderis Hall

  • Hazards – Fall from height.
  • PPE – 15 feet from all edges as parapets are not at adequate height. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved administrative control.

  • Hazards – Falls from height from open ledges. There is wildlife present on the Green Roof.

Great Lakes Research Facility
