Alex Johnson has more than a decade of experience as a senior exercise physiologist in the hospital and outpatient setting. During his time, he has worked in various roles including stress testing (exercise, pharmacological, echocardiography, CPET), inpatient and outpatient rehab. He has rehabilitated patients involving a wide range of pathologies including cardiac, pulmonary, and metabolic conditions. In addition to his clinical work, Alex served as an Aurora certified site preceptor and internship coordinator, educating exercise physiology students and new employees in the clinical setting with hands-on experience.
Alex has also spent time as a strength and conditioning coach. When coaching he took on many roles including training athletes of all ages, corporate wellness, group fitness, and working with a variety of personal training clients for health and longevity across the lifespan. He has successfully worked with clients in multiple sectors by combining elements of exercise physiology with strength and conditioning.
Alex holds a Master of Science degree in Applied Exercise Science from Concordia University of Wisconsin in 2016. His thesis research involved the assessment of the cerebral and muscle oxygenation response at maximal exercise with and without an altitude simulation training mask.
Alex has been with UWM since 2024 as an adjunct lecturer where he first started teaching Seminar in Clinical Exercise Physiology. As a professor he focuses connecting with students and using their individual learning style to effectively impact their education. His teaching focuses on connecting complex physiological mechanisms to their practical real-world application.
