Bio

Dr. Monica Wendel is a nationally recognized scholar and thought leader in social and health equity, structural determinants of health, and community engagement health. Her research has focused on systems change and social justice approaches to target root causes of health inequities, including targeting structural violence experienced by Black youth as a root cause of interpersonal and community violence.

Her research employs participatory action research approaches and a variety of methods, with an interest in elevating the voices of those most impacted by injustice and inequity. Her interests include:

  • Structural and social determinants of health
  • Power, oppression, and liberation
  • The role of language in enacting power to control resource distribution
  • Community-based system dynamics
  • Health equity for structurally marginalized and minoritized communities
  • Community capacity building
