Important Linguistics Update for Fall 2026 Registration

Greetings Linguistics undergraduates!

Starting in Fall 2026, there are some changes to the requirements for the major. These are designed to make things easier for students and also to introduce some new curricular areas.

The good news is that existing majors can choose to complete the major using either the old requirements or the new requirements.

The updates are summarized below and you may also refer to this file

For General Linguistics Majors. Under Special Requirements, you may now select at least three of the following:

  • LINGUIS 355, Language Behavior of AI Models
  • LINGUIS 420, Intro to Second Language Acquisition
  • LINGUIS 430, Language and Society
  • LINGUIS 440, Psycholinguistics
  • LINGUIS 455, Semantics
  • LINGUIS 468, Language in its Various Forms
  • LINGUIS 590, Morphology
  • LINGUIS 570, Issues in Bilingualism

For Applied Linguistics Majors. Under Special Requirements, you may now select at least two of the following:

  • LINGUIS 355, Language Behavior of AI Models
  • LINGUIS 440, Psycholinguistics
  • LINGUIS 468, Language in its Various Forms
  • LINGUIS 520, Advanced Second Language Acquisition
