Alumni Accomplishments 

Janan Najeeb (‘84, Microbiology) is one of the 2024 Women of Distinction, as chosen by Milwaukee Magazine. Najeeb is the executive director and founder of the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition and launched the Wisconsin Muslim Journal, the Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival, and the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance. In addition to other philanthropic endeavors and positions, Najeeb is credited for building cultural and religious bridges to educate people about Islam and connect people within the community. 

In the Media and around the Community 

Economics professor Rebecca Neumann spoke with WDJT Channel 58 about the potential impacts of tariffs.  

Earlier this year, the Thomas A. Greene Geological Museum, located in Lapham Hall, was recognized as one of the 11 most scientifically and historically important geological collections in the world by the International Union of Geological Sciences. It is the only one in the Western hemisphere. TMJ4 recently profiled its honor. 

On Kansas Public Radio, UWM biology professor Rafa Rodriguez reflected on the impact University of Missouri biology professor Rex Cocroft had on his career. 

Spanish professor Gabriel Rei-Doval was featured in Spanish media outlets La Voz de Galicia and Galicia Confidencial for his first book published in the creative writing genre, Cartas de Marco Polo e outros relatos. See the People in Print section for more details on the publication. 

The UWM Manfred Olson Planetarium was featured in Media Milwaukee for its impact on the human experience and in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for its Diwali themed show.  

Associate professor Itziar Lazkano (Economics) was an invited panelist for the Basque public broadcast network, EiTB. In two live post-election analyses from Washington, D.C., Lazkano contributed insights and expert commentary to audiences in both Basque and Spanish. The two-hour Spanish panel is available on line. Both were part of EiTB’s special election coverage. 

UWM’s Cultural Resource Management program, run out of the Anthropology Department, will nominate Waukesha County’s Senator William Blair House to join the National Register of Historic Places, the Waukesha Freeman reported. 

Craving something sweet? Associate professor Arijit Sen (History) provided some insight on Indian treats called mithai in an article published by the Chicago Tribune

China Daily spoke to distinguished professor Kathleen Dolan (Political Science) about female political candidates’ increasing visibility in the United States. She also spoke to WKOW about the political leanings of young people after the election, and was quoted by Agence France-Presse about Trump’s efforts to appeal to young male voters. 

Current interviewed assistant professor Derek Handley (English) about his recently published book, Struggle for the City: Citizenship and Resistance in the Black Freedom Movement, which examines urban renewal in the context of the Civil Rights movement. 

Professor Shale Horowitz (Political Science) penned an article published by the Indo-Pacific Defense Forum examining geopolitical threats to the democracy and free society of Taiwan. 

Retired senior scientist Jim Reinartz (Biological Sciences) was a guest on the “Inside OZ” podcast in November and spoke about the Cedarburg Bog.  

Professor Jeffrey Sommers (African & African Diaspora Studies and Global Studies) wrote an op-ed for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on the impact of budget cuts on UWM. He also wrote an election-related article for CounterPunch and spoke to the Elm Grove School for Lifelong Learning on “The Reconfiguring World Order.”  

Laurels and Accolades 

Professor Carolyn Eichner (History and Women’s & Gender Studies) has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar Grant for  January 1 through August 31, 2025, in support of her research and writing of a biography of 19th-century anarchist Louise Michel, orator, author, ethnographer, teacher, and leader in the Paris Commune. Eichner’s proposal was among the 9% funded of the 283 proposals submitted this cycle.
