International studies alum shares a day of her life in the Peace Corps

A young woman with tan skin and dark curly hair takes a smiling selfie. Three southeast Asian women smile in the background. Behind all four are balloon letters that say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2025.
UWM international studies alumna Arleth Nelson is a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand.

Arleth Nelson graduated from UWM in May of 2023 after majoring in International studies. Then she got to work. Nelson is a volunteer with the Peace Corps, an organization run by the U.S. government that places volunteers around the globe to work on matters of education, public health, the environment, and other areas of need.

Nelson is currently living and working in Thailand, where she works with a program called TESS: Teacher Empowerment for Student Success.

In the video below, Nelson takes us through her typical day as a Peace Corps volunteer.
