School of Information Studies academic advisor Maggie Flath has been named Advisor of the Year by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Advisors & Counselors Network (ACN). The ACN Advisor of the Year Award is presented annually to an advisor who exemplifies excellence in academic advising and who continually strives to go the extra mile for their students.

Recipients of this annual award are nominated by peers and students. When asked how she feels about this award, Maggie said, “Winning this award was such a surprise, I am still in shock weeks later. It’s hard for me to articulate exactly what this award means to me, but because this award really comes from my peers makes it even more special. It is such an incredible honor, and I am so thankful. I think some could say this means I am officially a “real” advisor.

Maggie has served as an academic advisor for the SOIS Undergraduate degree program in Information Science & Technology since 2017 and is also serving as interim academic advisor in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. Maggie is an alumna of UW-Milwaukee’s Master of Science in Administrative Leadership – Higher Education Administration. When asked what she likes most about advising she said, “I love getting to work with students from the start of their time at UWM to their graduation. It’s so wonderful to see their progress and to see all of their hard work pay off. It is really rewarding to see my students reach (and often exceed) the goals that they have set for themselves. Working with students in this way allows me to get to know them beyond their academics”.

Maggie’s dedication to her profession is summed up nicely by one student who said, “The impact of Maggie’s attentiveness to details, ability to make personal connections outside of the classroom, and drive to see her students succeed is something that I truly appreciate. Maggie has been a huge influence in my success at UWM. I am so grateful I had her to support me in navigating academics, on-campus jobs, developing leadership skills, and internships.”

We are so proud of Maggie and so grateful to have such a dedicated advisor working with our students. Maggie joins previous SOIS Advisor of the Year awardees Brian Williams (2018), Angie Sadowsky (2016), and Toby Deutsch (2013) in upholding a standard of excellence in SOIS advising.

Maggie was recognized at UWM’s Annual Fall Awards Ceremony on October 19, 2022.
