The Jewish Studies major and minor can be completed entirely online.
Is online education right for me?
Distance learners may be adults juggling full-time work and family responsibilities or traditional-aged students who find online courses the best solution to meet their educational needs.
The online format requires a high level of self-motivation and better than average time management skills. Online courses operate on the same semester-based schedule as in-person classes (the program is not self-paced). Fall classes start the first week of September with finals in mid-December, and spring classes start the third week of January with finals in mid-May.
How does it work?
Online students take the same courses as traditional on-campus UWM students and are taught by the same faculty and academic staff. The courses are just delivered in a different format. No distinction is made between an online student and a traditional student, and the application process is the same. To begin the application process, see apply.wisconsin.edu.
Once admitted, students will work with an assigned advisor in the College of Letters & Science via phone or Skype.
Following admission, you can declare the major by completing and submitting required paperwork via U.S. mail. The Coordinator of Jewish Studies will serve as your major advisor.
What if I am an out-of-state student?
We are piloting a special fee structure for fully online Jewish Studies students. At this point, fully online out-of-state students can take Hebrew language courses for a fee that approximates in-state tuition. We are hoping to expand this special pricing to other online Jewish Studies courses for fully online out-of-state students in the 2019-2020 academic year.
I’m enjoying my online courses but am not sure I want to be a major or minor. Does it matter?
Yes! Majoring or minoring in Jewish Studies makes you eligible for awards and scholarships from the Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies. Declaring your major or minor as soon as possible will make you eligible for these awards and will put you on the mailing list to hear about them. All Jewish Studies majors and minors can apply for these awards, whether they are taking all their classes online or are taking classes on campus.
Is there anything else that I should know?
All of the coursework required for the Jewish Studies major can be completed online. Jewish Studies majors are encouraged to take Hebrew as their foreign language, as it is offered entirely online at UWM.
Questions regarding the application process as a new freshman or as a transfer student can be directed to the Letters & Science admissions counselor at (414) 229-7711 or let-sci@uwm.edu. Questions specifically about the Jewish Studies major can be directed to Dr. Rachel Baum at rbaum@uwm.edu.
