Many students find it daunting even to try, especially when they aren’t established in their own fields yet. This panel will help students understand the value of professional networking and the best ways to go about it. It turns out that being a graduate student can be beneficial! This panel of experts will talk us through some of the most common options, from organizing conference panels to recruiting outside advisors to making full use of online resources. They’ll also reflect on the long-term benefits of networking for their own careers.

  • Walter Lanier is a lawyer, pastor, and Director of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement at MATC. He received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration-Finance at UW-Milwaukee and his law degree from University of Michigan.
  • May Xiong worked in the Graduate School, McNair Program and the Office of Graduate Diversity and Inclusion. Xiong received her master’s degree in history from the University of Missouri-Colombia and her MBA and a BA in political science and history from the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign.
  • Michael Nunley was the Coordinator of Research and Evaluation for the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division and received his PhD in Medical Anthropology from University of California-San Francisco.
  • Nigel Rothfels is the Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research at UW-Milwaukee and received his PhD in History at Harvard University.
  • David Clark left a job in the corporate world to become faculty at UW-Milwaukee. He is Associate Professor in English, the Dean of the College of Letters and Science, still consults, and owns a private business. He received his PhD in English at Iowa State University.
