About the Program
Beyond GEMS will provide a year of hands-on opportunities through networking mentorships and exposure to local industry to underserved young women, with access to the decision-makers in our communities who will support young women with a strong portfolio for a future network. This program was made possible, in part, by the Women & Girls Fund of Waukesha County who awarded a grant to UWM at Waukesha Continuing Education in 2021.
- Complete a leadership certificate program that will provide them skills they will use in both their professional and personal lives
- Connect with area professionals for a mentorship and opportunities to job-shadow
- Develop an education plan with set goals and knowledge of how those goals are attainable
- Develop coping mechanisms to deal with the stressors in their lives
- Serve as active members of our GEMS planning committee and see the entire conference through from start to finish

Participants are required to complete 40 hours total in the following areas:
Developing Leaders (20 hours)
This program consists of two courses that must be completed. Courses will be offered in a hybrid/online format. Students need to complete the required to work to qualify for the certificate.
Job Shadowing/Mentoring (10 hours)
This program will connect participants with local women business leaders and/or professionals to provide them with access to decision-makers and a platform to build their professional network. Participants will be placed based on their field of interest. *Students will research and set up for their schedule – time commitment minimum is 2 hours.
Higher Education Options (4 hours)
Participants will be provided with educational pathways based on their career interests and given the tools needed to act. *Students meet at campus or Zoom
Managing Your Personal Finances (2 hours)
This program provides the tools needed for young women to successfully manage their own finances and plan a future for themselves. Many young women struggle just to make ends meet. With a steady job, the knowledge of balancing your financing, and how to invest properly can make a tremendous impact on the future of young women and their families. *students meet at campus or Zoom
Emotional Intelligence EQ (4 hours)
This program will discuss the importance of your emotional intelligence and the impact it plays on your well-being. *students meet at campus or Zoom
