Information on the Closures of the Waukesha and Washington County Campuses

February 22, 2024

As part of the work of the College of General Studies Transformation Team (CGSTT), UWM is providing regular updates as it works toward closing the Washington County campus by June 30, 2024. These will be provided every two weeks to CGS faculty and staff and have a dedicated section in the biweekly Faculty & Staff Updates newsletter. Other updates may also be sent, as necessary, in addition to this biweekly email.

Work Group Updates

Goal 1: Plan for the end of in-person instruction on the Washington County campus

The Facilities/Moving subgroup has developed a timeline for the move/liquidation of furniture and other items at the Washington County campus. This includes identifying areas at both the Washington County and Waukesha campuses to use for staging and sorting. The subgroup also held a walkthrough of the Washington County campus last week with Coakley Movers to firm up details on the move.

The Student Transition Support team is in the final stages of completing the Provisional Plan, the documentation required by the Higher Learning Commission, which is due on March 1. Part of this includes working with current Washington County students to determine their plans.

An initial Fall 2024 schedule for CGS classes is complete. Like any college, CGS will monitor enrollments continuously and adjust to meet student demand.

Goal 2: Explore the future structure of the College of General Studies (CGS)

The Goal 2 group co-leads met with the co-leads of Goal groups 3 and 4 to get a status update of their work and are continuing to work on a revised timeline for the Goal 2 recommendation. The Goal 2 group is meeting later this week.

Goal 3: Plan future programming, particularly at the Waukesha Campus

The Goal 3 group continues to gather information, specifically to understand students’ interests. A survey was sent last week to prospective, current and former students at the Waukesha campus.

Goal 4: Develop plans for implementing any future decisions

In moving toward the “One UWM” goal of having one course catalog, the Goal 4 group co-leads have completed a list of 45 CGS courses that don’t have an equivalent in UWM’s current main campus curriculum. They have reached out to CGS chairs about these courses and have started work on an alignment process.

These written updates to CGS employees will continue through the end of the semester. This CGS webpage will remain the source of updated information, including copies of all previous update emails.
