Information on the Closures of the Waukesha and Washington County Campuses

January 11, 2024

As part of the work of the College of General Studies Transformation Team (CGSTT), UWM is providing regular updates as it works toward closing the Washington County campus by June 30, 2024. These will be provided every two weeks to CGS faculty and staff and have a dedicated section in the biweekly Faculty & Staff Updates newsletter. Other updates may also be sent, as necessary, in addition to this biweekly email.

Work Group Updates

Goal 1: Plan for the end of in-person instruction on the Washington County campus

In addition to the continuing work described in the most recent update, a work group on facilities planning has been formed:

  • Paul Price, Campus Administrator, Washington County, CGS
  • Melissa Spadanuda, AVC, Facilities Planning and Management, Main Campus
  • Jon Etta, Facilities Director, CGS
  • Kristin Schneider, Lecturer, Department of Math and Natural Sciences, CGS
  • Suzanne Joneson, Chair, Department of Math and Natural Sciences, CGS
  • Dean Kowalski, Chair, Department of Arts and Humanities, CGS
  • Chad Kraus, Support Specialist, CGS
  • Michael Doylen, Libraries Director, Main Campus
  • Kevin Jahnke, Campus Technology Support, Main Campus
  • Kristin Fekete, Divisional Financial Officer, CGS
  • Ron Gulotta, Campus Administrator for Waukesha
  • William Herrick, IT Specialist for Waukesha

CGS Dean Simon Bronner has met with budget and finance staff to review budget considerations and is determining changes in staffing needs for Fiscal Year 2025, considering the closing of the Washington County campus.

Goal 2: Explore the future structure of the College of General Studies (CGS)

The Goal 2 group has met twice since the last campus update. In one meeting, Drew Knab, the associate vice chancellor of business and financial services, discussed budgetary issues for CGS and the main campus. The group used a second meeting to review challenges and opportunities associated with the two options for the future structure of CGS.

Goal 3: Plan future programming, particularly at the Waukesha Campus

The co-leads of the Goal 3 group have convened three times since the last report. The three meetings focused on building an initial framework for a preliminary summary that’s due Jan. 12 to the CGSTT co-leads.

The preliminary report will provide a summary of information gathered to date and plans for continued market research before the group’s next deadline.

Goal 4: Develop plans for implementing any future decisions

Co-leads are planning a walkthrough of the Waukesha campus on Jan. 12 to gain an understanding of the available space and resources for potential future programming.

Work continues on researching future curricular alignments, securing needed academic approvals, and reviewing accreditation requirements for CGS and main campus programs.

These written updates to CGS employees will continue through the end of the semester. This CGS webpage will remain the source of updated information, including copies of all previous update emails.
