Bio

Mark C.E. Peterson is Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies and past president of the International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature, and Culture. Originally from Honolulu, raised in Minneapolis, Uppsala, Sweden, Chicago, Mobile, and Toronto. I’ve lived in Riga and Shanghai and West Bend, Wisconsin. A practitioner of taijiquan and kundalini yoga for over 40 years, I'm also a member of the Ukulele World Congress.

Research

Current research includes a semiotic analysis of the relationship between explanatory and narrative/mythological accounts of nature and completing an Aristotelian re-examination of environmental ethics. My work explores the intersection of theory and practice in environmental questions. I’ve also begun working with the Joseph Campbell foundation developing curriculum for mythological studies.

Publications

Early publications focused on Hegel and Kierkegaard (in The Owl of Minerva and the International Kierkegaard Commentary). Numerous book chapters in popularized philosophy, invited speaker on environmental philosophy, ecofeminism, and philosophy in pop culture.
