Enroll in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses at UW-Milwaukee. UWM requires fully admitted international students with an EAP hold or a graduate students with dual admission to enroll in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. We also encourage fully admitted international or domestic multilingual students without an EAP course requirement take the EAP course equivalent of the English Department courses.

If you are an undergraduate student, understand the information below to register for EAP courses :

  • Fully admitted international students with an EAP requirement have a hold in their Panther Access to Web Services (PAWS) account. This hold restricts them from enrolling in UWM courses until they enroll in their required EAP classes.
  • Fully admitted international or domestic multilingual students without an EAP course requirement should take the Guided English Placement (GEP) assessment. The GEP will determine which EAP course is best for them. Read more about the GEP.
    • International Multilingual Students: Contact the ELA Director/ EAP coordinator – Brooke Haley – after you complete the GEP. She will use your GEP placement to enroll you in the best EAP course for you.
    • Domestic Multilingual Students: You will register for your classes at your new Student Orientation. Tell the advisor you are working with that you would prefer an EAP class for multilingual students rather than the English Department’s version of the class.

If you are a graduate student, understand the information below to register for EAP courses:

  • Graduate students with dual admission must take an EAP course. There will be an English Proficiency Hold in Panther Access to Web Services (PAWS) until the ELA Academic Director/EAP Coordinator enrolls you in your required EAP course.
  • If you are a fully admitted graduate student, you can enroll in an EAP course to improve your English skills and confidence using English. If you are already enrolled in 7 graduate credits, you can take up to 12 credits for no additional charge. Learn more about EAP courses for graduate students.
    • EAP courses count as undergraduate credit and are not factored into your GPA.
      • Contact the ELA Director/ EAP Coordinator, Brooke Haley, to enroll in an EAP class. There are a few seats for auditors each semester
Elliel Headshot

After taking the EAP 100: Introduction to College Writing for Multilingual Students and the EAP 145: Practice in Academic Listening and Speaking classes at UWM, I can confirm that I’ve reached my academic goals. Before taking those classes, my goals were to reach the writing and speaking levels of my American friends. With the help and support of my EAP class teachers, I reached my goals without complications.
