Dear Campus Community,
I am thrilled to announce that UW-Milwaukee has once again earned R1 (Research 1) status from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
This is the fourth time in a row UWM has been counted among the top research institutions in the nation, this year ranking in the top 187 out of a pool of more than 3,900 institutions. UWM remains one of only two R1 universities in Wisconsin.
UWM was first named to Carnegie’s highest research activity category in 2016 and retained it in 2019 and 2022. This classification is based on a variety of factors, including the number of doctorates awarded and research expenditures during the intervening years.
I cannot overstate what an amazing achievement this has been, and it is all because of our tremendous faculty, staff and students. You made this happen. This is about your hard work, your dedication to the creation of knowledge and your willingness to share your discoveries with the world.
The first time we achieved this status, I think we all felt some measure of surprise. For years we had maintained a respectable R2 ranking. But achieving this designation four times in a row has shifted our collective perception of who we are and what our university has become.
UWM holds a position of respect and achievement among our peers. What started as a local commuter school has become a university with a national reputation for research.
Indeed, research is part of our core mission. But when we combine our commitment to research with our mission of providing access to education and our determination to stay engaged with our community, UWM stands out as a unicorn.
We are special. You are special. Thank you for your outstanding efforts. Your hard work has paid off – again.
Best regards,
Mark A. Mone, PhD
