General Interview Strategies

 General Interview Strategies

To best communicate in an interview you’ll need to know about yourself, the job and the types of questions you will encounter. Focus your answers on the interviewers’ interests and relevant information or accomplishments. Include relevant skills and personal qualities in your answers by using these strategies.

How to Practice:

  • Anticipate Questions: Review typical interview questions and identify field specific questions you are likely to encounter.
  • Write Phrases: Focus on the basic points you want to make. Do not write detailed word for word answers.
  • Practice Out Loud: Even if you are comfortable talking to new people and presenting your ideas or work outcomes, practicing will help identify aspects of your answers that are missing or difficult to understand. Practice online using the Mock Interview tool in PantherJobs.
  • Practice Using Varying Detail: This will make you more adaptive to different interview situations and interviewers preferences.
  • Don’t memorize answers!

Communication Challenges:

  • Unexpected questions can be unsettling.
  • Ask for clarification or re-wording of a question, if needed, is not wrong.
  • Take a moment to think about your answer and gather your thoughts before speaking.
