There’s more to us than having the only accredited architecture program in Wisconsin and a nationally recognized urban planning program. As a top-tier (R1) research university, it’s what we do with those distinctions that matters most. Through research and applied practice, our faculty, students and alumni tackle the most pressing challenges facing the world today.
Centers & Institutes
Our research centers and initiatives attract students and partners from around the globe. Together, our students and faculty work on impactful research in areas like historic preservation, sustainable design and community planning.

One unique aspect of UWM SARUP that stood out to me is the utter brilliance of faculty and adjunct professors, especially the depth of experience they have in research. Through them, my classmates and I have been connected with other practitioners and projects around the city.

Undergraduate Research
You can engage in paid research as an undergraduate, and that’s not the case at most universities.
Here, students collaborate with faculty on active research projects while gaining hands-on experience that bridges academic learning with real-world impact.
Graduate Research
Engage in advanced research exploring diverse topics such as material investigations, adaptive reuse and sustainable urban development.
Through paid research positions and collaborations with expert faculty, you’ll contribute to projects that influence architectural practices and urban planning strategies.

Research Partnerships
Sponsored studios bring you into contact with best practices in architectural design and research while you engage with professionals from sponsoring firms.
In addition, two major awards – the Marcus Prize and the Urban Edge Award – bring international architects to Milwaukee to co-teach a studio at UWM.
