Residents who have been approved to have an assistance animal or service animal in training (SAiT) as an accommodation by the UWM Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) and University Housing (referred to collectively as “Approved Animal”) will be permitted to have the Approved Animal live in their assigned room subject to the expectations contained in this policy.*

Please note that this policy outlines the general rights and responsibilities of residents with an Approved Animal. These expectations are not intended to provide an exhaustive list of Approved Animal related issues that may arise, and this policy may be altered by UWM at any time in its sole discretion. All residents, and their Approved Animals, are expected to comply with the policies outlined in the University Housing Resident Handbook.*

Upon entry, all residents complete an initial room condition report of their room, suite and/or apartment. Residence Life has the right to inspect any University Housing space to complete routine health and safety inspections. Any resident with an Approved Animal is expected to inform University Housing staff in writing if there is concern for staff members' safety if staff members enter when the owner is not present.*

In the event that University Housing has concerns with respect to my Approved Animal's well-being and UWM is unable to reasonably reach me, I authorize UWM to contact the person I designated as alternate to make arrangements for my animal's well-being. I understand that if UWM is unable to reach me or my alternative contact, it will contact the UWM Police Department and/or Milwaukee County Animal Control to take custody of my animal.*

1. All assistance animals must be kept out of common areas utilized by students including lounges, study areas, meeting rooms, computer rooms, etc. Assistance animals are only permitted in the hallways, stairways, or elevators if they are being transported to or from the owner's room utilizing the shortest route between the outside and the residents' assigned room. This expectation does not apply to SAiTs, which may accompany their trainer in Housing common areas, but are required to a special cape identifying it as such.*

2. Residents must be in appropriate control of their Approved Animal(s) at all times. All Approved Animals must be maintained under a standard measure of restraint (leash or carrier) when outside of the resident's assigned room.*

3. The Approved Animal’s waste must be disposed of properly. It is the owner’s responsibility to collect feces from University grounds, dispose of it in a plastic bag, and then place that bag in an outdoor garbage bin. Clean-up must occur IMMEDIATELY.*

4. Residents must remove Approved Animals that constitute a nuisance or danger to other residents or guests or that constitute a danger to property of other residents or the University, as determined by University Housing. In the event the Approved Animal is no longer permitted, the resident will be notified in writing and must remove the animal immediately, unless otherwise agreed to in writing by University Housing.*

5. The resident will take all reasonable precautions to protect individuals who may come into contact with the Approved Animal, as well as the property of the University and other students/residents. All liability for the actions of the Approved Animal (bites, scratches, odors, etc.) is the sole responsibility of the resident. Each resident is financially responsible for any losses or damage caused by their Approved Animal(s).*

7. Approved Animals must also have all required vaccinations up to date, be treated for fleas and be licensed with the City of Milwaukee. Documentation and verification is required and must be uploaded within this form.*
