Brenda Cullin

Brenda Cullin wins the University Staff Excellence Award. Dr. Sonya Martin

The distinguished honor and accolade of Doctor was bestowed to Sonya N. Martin, Ph.D. in Leadership for the Advancement of Learning and Service in Higher Education. Her dissertation focused on undecided students and major selection. Dr. Martin has been with the University for the past 12 years. She is a senior academic advisor for Pathway Advising and works with incoming undecided freshmen to help them identify a major pathway. In her role, Sonya serves as a valuable resource for students. She strives to connect students to our supportive campus resources.
 

Tiffany Thornton

Ms. Thornton has been a member of the Wisconsin Library Association for over the past 8 years and recently received the Wisconsin Library Association Member Spotlight. Click here to read the full article. Ms. Thornton an UWM alum two-fold, has worked at the UWM Libraries in various positions since 2012, and believes in the impact and significance of public service. In her current role as the Outreach & Community Engagement librarian, Ms. Thornton coordinates library experiences for local K-12 students, with the goal of making college an attainable post-secondary option for a greater number of students.

Ramona Sledge

Ms. Sledge was recently selected as UWM’s 2021 Academic Staff Outstanding Performance and Service Award winner. She is a 22-year employee and alum of UWM. As the Multicultural Student Success Coordinator, she organizes multiple events such as the Making Connections Program where she helps new and transfer students become acclimated to UWM by offering campus tours and connecting students to vital individuals and departments to help them succeed. For the past 2 years, she has chaired the Fall and Spring Welcome Reception to welcome all new and returning students to campus.
 

Portia Cobb

Portia Cobb is the recipient of the 2021 UWM Faculty Distinguished Public Service Award. Portia Cobb is the Associate professor, Department of Film, Video, Animation and New Genres. Portia Cobb Joined the Film and Video faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1992 as an Assistant Professor and Artistic Director (1992-2009) of the school’s Community Media Project. Currently she teaches both introductory and upper-level production and cross-disciplinary contextual elective courses in the department ranging from Radical Black Cinemas; Experimental Ethnography, Community Documentary and Multicultural America-a service-learning capstone course.
 

Dr. Larry Martin

Dr. Larry Marin is the recipient of the 2021 Ernest Spaights Plaza Award. The Ernest Spaights Plaza award is named in honor of the late Professor Ernest Spaights and is dedicated to individuals who have made significant, enduring and campus-wide contributions to the growth of and development of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Larry G. Martin’s research and publications have explored complex urban-related problems, trends and issues that inhibit the participation of adult learners in adult education programs. His involvement with welfare reform culminated in a co-authored text that informs adult literacy professionals on how to more effectively serve adult learners. Let’s again congratulate Dr. Larry Martin on this prestigious award.
 

Twyla McGhee

Twyla was recently featured in the Fall 2021 A.S. Connection Newsletter. When asked ‘who was someone you directly worked with who influenced your college career?’ the answer for many UWM alumni is Twyla Kawpel McGhee, Director of Multicultural Relations in the Department of Global Inclusion and Engagement. That may be her title today, but over the years, McGhee has worn several hats at UWM, always s in the realm of helping students. Before McGhee was employed at UWM, she was the director of the Ko-Thi Dance Company, a studio that offers classes in African dance and music. McGhee takes pride in the fact that even as she has transitioned into her many roles at UWM, she has always been able to balance dance with her career.
 

Dr. Gary Williams

Happy Retirement Gary! Gary Williams has been part of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Education following a dedicated career on campus as an administrator responsible for developing and providing academic support services to students, with a particular focus on minority and disadvantaged college and pre-college attendees and participants. Help us Congratulate Associate Professor; Director – Educational Policy & Community Studies; Institute for Intercultural Research on his Retirement!
 

Dr. Doris Johnson Browne

Dr. Doris Johnson Browne received the Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award on November 4, 2021 in Madison, Wisconsin. She has been a true pioneer across UW-Milwaukee in her service to students of color and their mental health needs. Her commitment and longevity as a psychotherapist, mentor, and advocate have impacted the lives of thousands of students over a 40-year distinguished career. Doris’s passion for building community, inclusivity, and bridges has impacted the university in innumerable ways. She is the foremother and innovator in bringing UWM to embrace all its communities with love and understanding. Let’s give Dr. Doris Johnson Browne a round of applause!
 

Dr. David Pate

Dr. David Pate (Social Welfare) receiving the 2021 Distinguished Social Worker Award from NASW-Wisconsin Chapter at their annual conference on November 3. This prestigious award is presented to one social worker every year who has made an outstanding contribution to their field of practice. David was selected for his groundbreaking work directed toward improving public policy affecting low-income black men and their families. Congratulations, David!
