The Office of the Provost invites internal applications for the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program. UWM may nominate up to two candidates for this program: one tenured/senior and one untenured/junior scholar. An internal review process will be used to select nominees. A committee established by the Office of the Provost will review internal applications and select UWM nominees.
The Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program supports scholarship and research that explores political polarization. Beginning with the 2027 cohort, the program is broadening its focus beyond domestic perspectives to ask what the United States can learn from the experience of polarization in other countries. The expanded focus seeks proposals that examine the relationship between populism and polarization, how other democracies have resisted or reversed polarization, and the conditions that determine whether polarization dissipates or accelerates into systemic violence.

Award Information
- $200,000 fellowship for a 12- or 24-month period.
- Funds may be used for salary, project-related travel, research assistants, and data collection.
- The fellowship must begin on the first of the month between June and September of 2027.
- Awardees may not accept other fellowships during the award period.
Internal Timeline
- October 1, 2026: Internal applications due to Canan Bilen-Green, Office of the Provost, at bilengre@uwm.edu.
- October 15, 2026: UWM nominees notified.
- November 13, 2026: Carnegie submission deadline; selected UWM nominees must submit their full proposal and required materials to Carnegie.
Internal Application Requirements:
- One letter of Support from either the Department Chair, Associate Dean, or College Dean. Only one letter is required.
- Curriculum vitae.
- A 3-5 page project statement describing the proposed project, addressing the Carnegie selection criteria, and explaining how the project aligns with the goals of the fellowship.
- Budget and budget narrative outlining the proposed use of fellowship funds.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
- Applicants must have a PhD or hold a terminal degree.
Selection criteria (from Carnegie):
- Originality and promise of the idea.
- Quality of the proposal.
- Record of the nominee.
- Plans to communicate findings to a broad audience.
- Promise to offer lessons for the US in addressing harmful polarization or enhancing social cohesion.
