Dear UWM Colleagues,
Scott Gronert, dean of the College of Letters and Science (L&S), has decided to retire in June of this year. Scott joined UWM as the dean of L&S in 2018.
Scott earned his PhD at UC Berkeley, conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado and taught for 16 years at San Francisco State University. Before coming to UWM, he worked at Virginia Commonwealth University for nine years, progressing from professor to department chair to associate dean for research. His outstanding career reflects UWM’s commitment to student success, impactful research and scholarship.
Scott has been an incredible leader in L&S and UWM. Together, Scott and colleagues in L&S have made many positive changes to support our mission. He has deftly navigated the construction of the new Chemistry Building, served as interim provost, restructured academic units and added First-Year Bridge to L&S, to name just a few of the impactful ways that Scott has spearheaded important initiatives for UWM and L&S. He has truly given this university a brighter future through his work.
I am deeply appreciative of Scott’s leadership. His dedication to UWM and thoughtful contributions have been invaluable in his time here. Join me in thanking and congratulating him on a wonderful career and for his service to the university.
We will begin an internal search for an interim dean soon and will commence a national search starting in the fall. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
