Submarine V

Summary:

Special Assignment series called “Submarine.” The story reports on submarine warfare exercises conducted by naval reservists on Lake Michigan. This segment shows operations with the USS Sablefish (SS 303), assigned to hunt the USS Runner (SS 476). Footage of the submarine seen surfacing, and activities below deck to prepare for re-surfacing like stowing the periscope and eventually opening the hatch. The segment ends with a dramatic shot of the submarine in profile surfacing with nose diagonally emerging from the lake. Some footage is silent.

The USS Sablefish was a US Navy submarine first introduced to the Great Lakes after the opening of th St Lawrence Seaway in 1959 and it returned to patrol in 1961 until 1967, when it was assigned to European waters. The USS Runner, a combat veteran of WW, was in the Great Lakes for reservist training in the summer of 1964.
