Submarine II

Summary:

Special Assignment series called “Submarine.” The story reports on submarine warfare exercises conducted by naval reservists on Lake Michigan. It shows operations with the USS Sablefish (SS 303), assigned to hunt the USS Runner (SS 476). Footage is seen of the Sablefish submarine both as a profile from another boat and on board the Runner submarine with Navy command at the helm. The segment ends below deck with sirens and naval crew preparing to descend. Some footage is silent.

The USS Sablefish was a US Navy submarine first introduced to the Great Lakes after the opening of the St Lawrence Seaway in 1959 and it returned to patrol in 1961 until 1967, when it was assigned to European waters. The USS Runner, a combat veteran of WW, was in the Great Lakes for reservist training in the summer of 1964.
