Ross Lewis Editorial Cartoons 1

Title:
Summary:

Historical review of editorial cartoon themes with Ross Lewis. Examining a series of very specific drawings placed on an easel, George Lockwood (the Journal picture editor) asks Lewis about the themes he drew to cover the news over his career. Themes include violence, symbolic importance (like the use of the swastika during World War II), World War II, global and national politics by profiling politicians (like Tito, Bob Taft, Joe McCarthy), sports, and Wisconsin weather.

Lewis was the political cartoonist for the Milwaukee Journal, and he won a Pulitzer Prize for his anti-Nazi editorial cartoon in 1935. This news reel coincided with The Cartoons of R. A. Lewis, Milwaukee Journal published in 1968.

SR210 is the first of two reels on Ross Lewis.
