Global Studies majors must complete an international experience as a part of their coursework: a study abroad course; an international internship course; or an approved domestic internship with an international focus.
Other majors in the department are not required to complete an internship or study abroad, but they are able to count an internship toward the credits required for the major if they complete an approved internship course.
Meet with Undergraduate Advisor for Your Major
If you’re planning on completing an internship, internationally or domestically, your first step is to meet with the undergraduate advisor for your major! They will guide you through the process of identifying career fields that are of interest and suggest some strategies for conducting your internship search.

Request Internship Approval
For all international internships, get your internship approved using this Internship Placement Request Form (DOC).
Travel Registration
Global Studies students who are completing an overseas internship must complete a travel registration form before traveling abroad.
NOTE: If a program destination has a US Department of State or CDC travel advisory of 3 or 4, applicants must submit a completed Travel Risk Assessment (PDF) as outlined in the UWM International Travel Policy.
Internship Details
If you are arranging your internship independently and seeking academic credit from UWM, you must work through CIE’s Study Abroad application process to obtain pre-departure orientation and advising and obtain mandatory UW System health insurance.
