Laboratory
All lab testing requires an order from a provider. If labs are needed from an outside provider, please contact us.
The Student Health and Wellness Center laboratory provides routine, preventative and diagnostic testing. The medical laboratory has met all criteria for the Laboratory Accreditation by COLA, a national healthcare accreditation organization. Accreditation is given only to laboratories that apply rigid standards of quality and pass rigorous on-site surveys. The Student Health Center has earned COLA accreditation because of a long-term commitment to provide quality service to UWM students.
The Student Health and Wellness Center’s lab processes about 13,000 tests annually, many of these tests are performed in-house with results being conveyed to the medical provider during the visit.
We do not bill insurance and we try to keep the costs to students as low as possible. Please note; pricing and availability subject to change at any time.

Immunizations
There are no required immunizations to attend UWM, however, we highly recommend that you are up to date on your immunizations including the COVID-19 vaccines as well as the annual flu vaccine. Having your vaccination information on file with the clinic is important.
Every year Wisconsin colleges and universities are required by state statute to provide all enrolled students with detailed information about meningococcal disease and Hepatitis B, including data about the availability and effectiveness of vaccines against these diseases.
Information about the disease and vaccination can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/meningococcal/index.html and https://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/hbv/bfaq.htm.
Colleges and universities must also ensure that all students living in residence halls affirm that they have received this information and must verify whether students have been vaccinated against either disease. All residential housing students will be asked for this information during housing registration.
SHAW center offers a select number of vaccines and aims to keep student costs as low as possible. We do not bill insurance. Please note that pricing and availability are subject to change at any time. Please call SHAW for current availability and pricing.
Allergy Immunotherapy Injections
Student Health and Wellness Center (SHAW) may be able to continue to administer allergy injections that have been ordered for you through your allergist. The Student Health Center DOES NOT perform allergy testing or determine what serums are appropriate for you.
To begin treatment here, you will need to have your allergy records sent to SHAW. Once your records are received, you will schedule an allergy consult appointment with one of our medical staff. Upon review of your records and history, the medical provider will determine if it is appropriate for you to receive injections on campus.
A required information form needs to be completed by your allergist.
- Download the Allergy Information Form.
- Have your allergist complete the form.
- Have Your Allergist Fax it to the clinic at (414) 229-4161.
Orders will need to be updated annually. After each injection, you are required to wait at the clinic for 30 minutes for observation.
Each injection costs $10.00. We do not accept outside health insurance. Students are responsible for payment at the time of service. We accept cash, VISA, MasterCard, or check.
Your allergy serum vials can be stored at SHAW. They can be shipped from your allergist or carried in by the patient.
Gender Affirming Care
The Student Health & Wellness Center (SHAW) offers gender-affirming hormone therapy in a safe, supportive environment. We begin with a 45-minute consultation to discuss your goals, review the risks and benefits, and outline expected physical changes. If you choose to move forward, we’ll schedule a follow-up visit for baseline labs and a brief physical exam.
Ongoing follow-up visits occur at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year, then every 6 to 12 months. Provider visits are covered by your student fees; labs and supplies involve low additional costs, and prescriptions are filled at outside pharmacies.
We welcome students to begin care with us when possible. However, you may be referred to an off-campus provider if:
- You’re planning to leave UWM in the next semester or two
- You have private insurance that makes community care more affordable
- You are seeking additional services such as surgeries or laser hair removal
- You require more specialized care for complex medical needs
To get started with on-campus care, make an appointment or call us at 414-229-7429 option 1.
For off-campus options, visit the Community Resource Database, then select the “Gender Affirming Care” button in the database.

Letter Writing for Gender Affirming Surgeries
Students already connected with a SHAW – Counseling provider, can request a letter of readiness (LOR) from your current provider. Students not established with SHAW – Counseling can start by calling 414-229-7429 option 2 and request to schedule a LOR consultation. You do not need to be in ongoing therapy at SHAW. SHAW aims to reduce barriers and support you in accessing affirming care. If it’s determined that SHAW isn’t the best fit for your needs, we will provide appropriate referrals to community providers.
