Overview
For more than 25 years, Urban Studies Programs at UWM has organized its annual spring student conference, the Student Research Forum. The Forum provides a comfortable venue for students, alumni, faculty and community leaders and members, to come together to investigate and discuss the complexities of the urban environment. Organized by graduate students in Urban Studies, the Forum reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the curriculum as well as the varying interests of a diverse student body and affiliated faculty. Graduate students from urban studies, as well as other disciplines such as history, geography, political science, African and African diaspora studies, sociology, urban planning, architecture, education, and public health, present their research on contemporary and historical urban issues.
The Student Research Forum provides students with an opportunity to sharpen their presentation skills at a juried poster session and at roundtables or panels, and to receive constructive feedback from scholars and alumni who share an interest and expertise on urban issues and policy. Undergraduate majors in urban studies and master’s and doctoral students present their research—capstone projects, class papers, theses, or dissertation chapters—in the professional, yet relaxed, atmosphere of the Forum. Most years the spring conference includes a keynote presentation by an urban scholar and a community panel to provide opportunities for students, faculty and alumni to engage with new urban scholarship and interact with local change-makers. The spring conference ends with an awards ceremony that recognizes exemplary scholarship and other contributions by students in the program.
