FAQs

Do students need to apply?

No application is required. Students will automatically receive the award following their admission and prior to the start of their first semester.

How are students notified of their award?

MAP awards are granted to newly admitted students on a monthly basis. Students are notified of their eligibility for the award via email. Details of the award are shared in their financial aid award.

What process is used for a student to accept the award?

Students do not need to accept the award. It is automatically applied to their PAWS account following their admission and prior to the start of their first semester.

If a student switches between academic careers, does that affect their eligibility?

Students enrolling in the associate degree program are not eligible for the award; therefore, a student will not qualify if they decide to enroll at the Waukesha or Washington County campuses. If students change their careers from an associate degree program to a bachelor’s degree program, they do not become eligible for the MAP. Students are only eligible if they are first-time freshmen or first-time transfer students.

Will the scholarship be honored if a student defers their admission to a future semester?

Yes, provided they still meet the eligibility requirements. Students deferring from fall to spring will need to notify the Office of Student Scholarships of their intent to defer so their award can be adjusted accordingly.

Can this be combined with other scholarships or grants at UWM?

Yes! Students can receive this award in combination with need-based programs or other scholarships.

Are students who apply for summer semester admission eligible?

Yes, summer applicants are eligible, but their award will not be applied to the summer term. The award will be applied to the fall and spring terms.

Are students who apply for spring semester admission eligible?

Yes, spring applicants are eligible, but they will only receive 50% of the annual award for that semester.

Are students who enroll part-time eligible?

No. Students must have full-time continuous enrollment to be eligible for the award. Students who drop below full-time status in a given term lose renewal eligibility for future terms.

Are College of General Studies students eligible?

No. This award is exclusively for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree on the Milwaukee campus.

Why hasn’t a continuing student’s MAP award been disbursed for the coming/current term?

The award is renewable each year for students who maintain good academic standing and are continuously enrolled full-time at the Main Campus with no withdrawals or breaks between consecutive fall and spring semesters.

If a student is graduating in December, can they receive the full $1000 annual amount in the fall semester alone?

No, the student will receive 50% of the annual award for that semester.
