COMSDIS 460, Survey of Adult Neurogenic Language and Speech Disorders, is an upper-class course within the Communication Sciences and Disorders program. It is frequently students’ first exposure to working with the adult population through the professional lens of speech-language pathology and audiology. As such, the service-learning portion of this course requires the students to assist in various healthcare settings, including area hospitals and assisted living facilities. With a class size of around 20 students, we can navigate focused discussions on issues and ideas they encounter during their experiential learning experience. The students summarize their experience at the end of the semester through an audio or video self-reflection.
