Academic Staff Outstanding Teaching Award
Deadline: April 3, 2026
The Academic Staff Awards Committee, a standing committee of the Academic Staff, invites nominations for the 2026 Academic Staff Outstanding Teaching Award. Up to three awards of $1,500* will be selected by the Academic Staff Awards Committee. The award will be announced in the September issue of the UWM Report and will be presented by the Chancellor at the annual UWM Employee Excellence Awards ceremony in the fall.
Nominees will be evaluated on factors such as initiative, innovation, and dedication to teaching and facilitating instruction. Please follow the numerical format listed below and address each criterion under separate headings. Individual letters should not exceed 3 pages.
- The nominee should demonstrate continued excellence in teaching:
- Fostering student motivation and learning
- Demonstration of classroom effectiveness
- Innovation in delivery of content
- Investment in curricular development
- Service to the University as it relates to campus/community/professional citizenship.
Nominees should:
- Be members of the Academic Staff with a fixed term, probationary, or indefinite appointment.
- Have completed a minimum of four years of service to UWM (excluding leave of absence) teaching two courses or more per semester in any combination of the appointments listed in #1 above by January 1, 2025.
- Not have received an Academic Staff Award (excluding Professional Development Award) in the prior four years.
- Neither nominees, nor members of their immediate family, may be serving a current term as a member of the Academic Staff Awards Committee.
Nominations may be submitted by UWM employees or currently enrolled UWM students. The Nominator must:
- Complete the Academic Staff Outstanding Teaching Award Nomination Form.
- Write a letter of nomination (not to exceed 3 pages). **
- Secure only two additional supporting letters of recommendation on behalf of the nominee (not to exceed 2 pages). **
- Inform the nominee of their nomination and request their current vitae/resume.
- Submit ONE electronic file (pdf preferred) that includes all requested materials by April 3, 2026 to the Secretary of the University’s Office, secofunv@uwm.edu
** Nomination letter and supporting letters of recommendation should address all the points listed in the EVALUATION section above to the best of their ability. One supporting letter is recommended to be written by a student (not a Teaching Assistant) taught in a prior semester. Please keep supporting letters to two pages. Other supporting documents may be required of the finalists later. Please do not include formal teaching evaluations in your nomination.
* The stipend is contingent on budgetary constraints; we cannot guarantee a cash award in 2026. To be eligible to receive the monetary award and to be recognized at the award ceremony, award recipients must remain employed through the end of the calendar year of the ceremony. Exceptions may be made for employees who have retired before the end of the calendar year.

Evaluation
Nominees will be evaluated based on a nomination letter plus two additional letters of recommendation. Please follow the numerical format listed below and address each criterion under separate headings. Individual letters should not exceed 3 pages.
The nominee should possess the following:
- Exhibits continued excellent performance evaluations over time in assigned duties.
- Contributes to the University in the form of committee work, special assignments, or other extraordinary activities.
- Provides service to the community in capacities that will enhance the University.
- Serves in professional organizations, with awards and recognition, or other evidence of such performance or service.
- Demonstrates factors such as initiative, innovation, and dedication to the job.
Criteria
Nominees should:
- Be members of the Academic Staff with a fixed term, probationary, or indefinite appointment; or a limited appointment with a fixed term, probationary, or indefinite back up appointment.
- Have completed a minimum of four years of service to UWM (excluding leave of absence) in a 50% or greater appointment in any combination of the appointments listed in #1 above by January 1, 2026.
- Not have received an Academic Staff Award (excluding Professional Development Award) in the prior four years.
- Neither nominees, nor members of their immediate family, may be serving a current term as a member of the Academic Staff Awards Committee.
Nomination Procedure
Nominations may be submitted by UWM employees or currently enrolled UWM students. The Nominator must:
- Complete the Academic Staff Outstanding Performance & Service Award Nomination Form.
- Write a letter of nomination (not to exceed 3 pages). **
- Secure only two additional supporting letters of recommendation on behalf of the nominee (not to exceed 2 pages) **
- Inform the nominee of their nomination and request their current vitae/resume.
- Submit ONE electronic file (pdf preferred) that includes all requested materials by April 3, 2026 to the Secretary of the University’s Office, secofunv@uwm.edu
