Roof Access Information & Procedures

UWM roofs have fall and other hazards. The building list below provides the various hazards present and required controls for UWM personnel. Personnel shall plan accordingly to conduct work safely.

In addition to the controls stated below, the following measures shall be taken:

  • UWM Facilities – When working around roof edges and a fall system is not available, the employee shall use either the portable guardrail system or the mobile fall restraint system (water bag). Notify UWM Police in advance of going onto the roof.
  • Students, professors or non-facilities personnel must obtain authorization and training per the Roof Access Procedure.
  • Contractors must assess the fall hazards and submit a fall protection plan to your UWM project manager. Contractors must obtain access to the roof from your UWM project manager.

Building Hazards and Required Controls

Architecture and Urban Planning (AUP) Building
  • Hazards – Fall from height. Guardrails are present, but not interconnected.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge where guardrails are not present, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Art Building
  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges. Strobic fume hood system present.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Art Center Building
  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Arts Center Lecture Hall
  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Bolton Hall
  • Hazards – Fall from height; Radio frequency hazards are present in designated area.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Cambridge Commons – 6th Floor
  • Hazards – Fall from height.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Cambridge Commons – 5th Floor – North and South Wings
  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet away from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Chapman Hall
  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges. Steep sloped roof.
  • Controls – For flat roof, must be 15 feet from edges from open ledges; parapets are at adequate height. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure. For sloped roof, access prohibited without a fall protection plan.
Chemistry Building
  • Hazards – Potential high winds. Strobic fume hood system present.
  • Controls – None required. Guardrails present at adequate height.
Cunningham Hall
  • Hazards – Fall from height; Unguarded open ledges; Satellite antennas are present
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet from all edges as parapet is not at adequate height. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Curtin Hall
  • Hazards – Fall from height
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet from all edges as parapet is not at adequate height. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (EMS)
  • Hazards – 4th Floor Roof – Fall from height; 13th Floor Roof – Falcons are present. Strobic fume hood system present.
  • Controls – 4th Floor – Must be 15 feet from leading edge; Guardrails are present at adequate height for 13th Floor Roof. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Enderis Hall
  • Hazards – Fall from height.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet from all edges as parapets are not at adequate height. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Engelmann Hall
  • Hazards – Fall from height. Sloped roof.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet from all edges as parapets are not at adequate height. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Garland Hall
  • Hazards – Chemical fume hoods exhaust system present. Steep sloped roof.
  • Controls – Fume hood shutdown and lockout/tagout procedures must be followed. Guardrails are present and at adequate height. For sloped roof, access prohibited without a fall protection plan.
Golda Meir Library
  • Hazards – Falls from height from open ledges. There is wildlife present on the Green Roof.
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet from all open edges. Guardrails present are at adequate height where located. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Great Lakes Research Facility
  • Hazards – Fall from height; Wildlife present on the Green Roof, Chemical Fumes
  • Controls – Must be 15 feet from edges as parapets are not at adequate height. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure. Fume hood shutdown and lockout/tagout procedures must be followed.
Greene Hall
  • Hazards – Fall from height. Steep sloped roof.

  • Hazards – Fall from height; Skylights are present.

  • Controls – Guardrails are not of sufficient height in various areas. Maintain 15 ft from leading edge. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.

  • Controls – Must be 15 feet from all edges as parapets are not present. If working close to the edge, you must implement an approved safety control measure.
Norris Building
  • Hazards – Fall from height. Steep sloped roof.
