The current regulatory landscape informing the research enterprise includes serious growing concerns by the U.S. government regarding malign influence over federally-funded research. To address the growing concerns around research security, the U.S. federal government has enacted directives (NSPM-33), regulations, (CHIPS Act) and implemented federal agency rules (NSF, NIH, DOE, DOD, USDA, NASA), which require individuals involved in federally-funded research to complete Research Security Training (RST).

Research Security Training

Research Security Training at UWM is accessed through Canvas and consists of the NSF SECURE consolidated Research Security Training (RST). To fulfill this federal training requirement, UWM researchers must complete Module 6: Research Security Training found within the Division of Research Canvas Training Catalog.

Research Security Training includes:

  • Cybersecurity: Protecting research data, systems, and intellectual property
  • International collaboration: Engaging responsibly with global partners
  • Foreign interference risks: Recognizing and mitigating undue influence
  • Disclosure requirements: Accurately reporting external support, affiliations, and activities
  • Conflict of interest and commitment: Identifying and managing potential conflicts
