University Services & Research Building is on schedule to begin Phase 1 of network infrastructure upgrades and replacement starting at 5:00AM on the morning of September 15, 2026, with work continuing each morning before usual business hours through September 18, 2026.
Each morning between 5:00AM and 8:00AM Network Services staff will be installing new network switches and moving all cabling from old equipment to new. This work will cause network interruptions throughout the building as fiber optic and ethernet cables are moved to the new switches. These interruptions will affect both the ethernet and Wi-Fi connections fed from each telecommunication room. Steps will be taken to minimize interruption, but it is not possible to completely avoid any outage with our current resources.
Once this work is complete, a second maintenance window will be defined to replace the Wi-Fi access points at USRB with modern equipment as well.
Impact to Users
As cabling is moved between old and new switches, network access supported out of each telecommunication room will be interrupted. This should mostly be experienced as rolling network interruptions to ethernet wall jacks and Wi-Fi in different areas of the building each day, with short wider outages as fiber optic uplinks are moved to new hardware.
