Colloquium: Dr. Daniel Minahan

November 6 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Rigidity of Maps Between Spaces of Polynomials

In the 1500s, Ferrari found a method to find the roots of a quartic polynomial. As part of his solution to this problem, he found a formula to turn a quartic polynomial into a cubic polynomial. We will discuss recent work of the author with De Pool, Huxford, and Schillewaert which shows that this formula is, in some sense, unique. This talk will explain some of the connections between spaces of polynomials and various other areas of mathematics, such as low-dimensional topology, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. No background in any of these subjects will be required.
