How We Begin to Remember
Dr. Steven Volk, Professor Emeritus, Department of History, Oberlin College.
On September 11, 1973, the Chilean military, led by General Augusto Pinochet, overthrew the socialist government of Salvador Allende. In this talk, Professor Volk will explore how the attitude toward Salvador Allende and Augusto Pinochet shifted in the U.S. press, and the surprising way that the Chilean coup is still remembered in the United States. The analysis will stress the critical role that photography played in the weeks and months after the coup.
